Welcome Back Faculty & Staff

To the Staff Members of Carter-Parramore Academy, Hope Academy, and Bold Step:


Welcome to School Year 2017-2018! I hope you’ve enjoyed a restful and rejuvenating summer with an opportunity to appreciate family and friends as well as pursue some personal and professional projects and interests.


Summers always seem to be filled with the expectation to regroup, reflect and refine ideas that surfaced during the busy school year, but were not fully actualized due to the pace of the academic schedule. Hopefully, this summer provided all of us opportunities to accomplish many of the smaller things that were on our “to do lists” and new adventures to place on our “bucket lists”.


Now, let’s look at the updates. This year’s leadership team and I excitedly look forward to working with you as we strive to move the school forward. We will focus on the Superintendent’s theme ‘Putting Children First”. It is imperative to remember that “it is not about the structure, but the instruction”. We cannot allow ourselves to get “caught-up in the “haves and have-nots”, but to focus on using what we have and can access to get tasks completed so we can “finish well”. We will maximize the use of all tools and resources that are currently at our disposal.


As you know, the State of Florida has set in motion turnaround legislation as a means of ensuring that every student receives a high]quality education. Hence, we, the Carter-Parramore Complex, see this as foremost as well. Secondly, we are introducing and promoting the philosophy of the fixed mindset vs. growth mindset championed by Professor Carol Dweck. These theories examine the underlying beliefs people have about learning and intelligence. When students believe they can get smarter, they understand that effort makes them stronger. Additionally, when individuals believe their talents can be developed (through hard work, good strategies, and input from others) they are exhibiting a growth mindset. They tend to achieve more than those with a more fixed mindset (those who believe their talents are innate gifts—from birth). Thirdly, we will be fostering the learning mindset of Purpose & Relevance, which builds on the premise---When students believe that schoolwork has a purpose and relates to their life outside of school, they are more eager to learn. For us, these are bold undertaking, but feasible. Mindset resources and activities will be shared throughout the year with parents and guardians so they can assist us in this effort.


Ultimately, I expect and encourage all faculty and staff members to “step up” and feel empowered to be “movers and shakers” on the campus this year. Let us strive to become participants in the movement---ensuring every student receives a high-quality education. If you work in a custodial capacity, ensure all areas of the campus are clean, safe and beautified. If you are in food service, make sure all meals served are nutritious and delectable---served with a smile and/or with an encouraging word. If you are responsible for security and law enforcement, make certain individuals are met with civility rather than suspicion. If you are a staff member, provide guidance and clear directions. And what if you’re a teacher; your list is endless. Start with care and concern; molding and shaping students into productive and contributing individuals in society as they matriculate to higher heights. In other words, let’s perform our tasks and responsibilities throughout the year, as though the very core of this community depends upon our continued existence.
